Perinatal Psychiatry

Perinatal mental health problems occur during pregnancy or in the first year following the birth of a child. It is scary to face up to a mental health issue during this sensitive time but it is estimated that 20% of women are affected.

Ask for help if you have any mood changes that are affecting you for more than a few days, or are having an impact on your ability to do everyday tasks including taking care of your family.

We can help you if you

  • Already have a mental illness when you get pregnant.
  • Worry because you have had such problems in the past – this may make it more likely that you will become unwell during or after your pregnancy.
  • Develop a mental health problem for the first time during or after pregnancy or including postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, perinatal OCD.

Our specialist consultant psychiatrist offers

  • Preconception advice for women with complex or severe mental health problems
  • Advice and monitoring on the risks and benefits of using mental health medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Assessment and treatment of any mental health issues that develop during or after pregnancy including guidance on family support and relationship with your infant.
