Dr. Waleed Fawzi
MD MSC, MRCPSYCH
Consultant Old Age psychiatrist
I have worked as a consultant old age psychiatrist in the NHS since 2011. I am experienced at assessing and treating patients suffering from co-morbid physical and mental health conditions, including dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. I work routinely with complex medication regimes and, where appropriate, reduce polypharmacy.
After graduating from Cairo University in 1995 (honours) I was awarded a UN scholarship to study for a diploma in Geriatrics and Gerontology at the International Institute on Ageing (Dip Ger, 1998 – Magna Com Laude). I trained in psychiatry at the Behman Hospital and Cairo University (Egypt), where I completed an MSc degree in psychiatry and neurology.
I moved to London in 2003 to train in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital – Institute of Psychiatry and was elected to the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2006 (MRCPsych). I was also awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) in 2009 for my research on adherence to antidepressants, jointly supervised at Cairo University and the University of Liverpool.
I completed my specialist training in old age psychiatry in 2010 and started my consultant career in East London NHS Foundation Trust, where I am currently Trust Lead for Mental Health Care of Older People.
