Systemic Family Therapist

Marsha Myers is a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist with more than 35 years experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in psychological and psychiatric services.

She is a qualified Social Worker and gained an MSc in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy with the Institute of Family Therapy in conjunction with Birkbeck, University of London.

Marsha always had a keen interest in working with families from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. She researched the cultural needs of patients and their families on a psychiatric adolescent in-patient unit for her dissertation for her MSc in family therapy.

Over the years, Marsha worked in different services, including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), adolescent in-patient units in both the NHS and at the Priory Hospital. She has managed professional teams in Social Care and CAMHS, including an Intensive Community Treatment Team and a Community Drug Team. She also has extensive experience in working with families when a parent has a mental health diagnosis. She has a great deal of experience in enabling parents to gain insights into adolescent difficulties, especially in relation to issues regarding use of social media and technology.

During her sessions, Marsha uses a systemic approach to enable family members, couples, and children to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on family strengths and make useful changes in their relationships. Marsha also uses her training in Mindfulness, Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) in her work.

In addition to families, Marsha works with couples, individuals, children, or parents and children together.
